I've browsed the other posts regarding this topic and I'm not fully satisfied. The problem is not feedback necessarily but when I hit certain notes on the fretboard they swell very loudly and sustain infinitely. So basically I have to make sure I don't sit on these notes too long. This doesn't really happen at practice levels only when I'm playing with a drummer and a bassist. It sounds like what you are describing are hot spots on the fret board or frequencies that have a stronger harmonic response causing them to be more prone to ringing out or feeding back. I think they are as common as dead spots. From what I have read, the hot spots are caused by sympathetic frequencies based on the specific construction and nuances of your guitar. I have read that plek-ing the guitar can help to eliminate dead spots and hot spots but I have never had a guitar plek-ed before. I have read that a part of the plek-ing process adjusts the crown (fore & aft) of the troublesome fret helping to eliminate the sympathetic frequencies. Again, I don't know this first hand. You may want to do some research on the Plek website. I have a new custom guitar on order that will hopefully ship in the next week or so. It is coming with a hand wound Kent Armstrong adjustable 16 pole PAF style humbucker. I selected that pickup because to my ears it was a dryer, less resonant sounding pickup. Some pickups tend to amplify the unwieldy overtones of a hollowbody instrument. I suspect that it is this dryer characteristic of the Kent Armstrong pickup that may help to decrease hot spots on your guitar. Only speculating here. Your guitar can have more than one hot spot; that is not unusual. As far as I know hot spots do not move around unless you have changed something on your guitar - e.g. bridge placement, etc. If you are finding that the "swell and sustain" problem is a moving target - i.e. not always at the same fret(s) - then maybe it is a totally different issue.
