Cost-conscious couples say "I don't" to some wedding frills
Here the bride - and she is older, more aware of costs and, as often, to pay for a piece of wedding Big Fat itself.
That's good news and bad news for the industry to San Diego wedding, which generates hundreds of millions of dollars each year for a variety of small and large businesses, hotels and catering companies to dress makers and florists.
Nationally, June is high season for weddings, but in San Diego sun-blessed climate, marriages are an event all year. And, because the persistent economic malaise, they are also much more frugal business.
Last year in San Diego couples spent an average of $ 30,687 on their marriage, compared to an average of $ 35 276 in 2008, according to a survey by TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com. Nationally, the average spent last year was $ 26,984 compared to $ 29 334 in 2008.
Anja Winikka, editor of TheKnot.com, the particulars of the nation's largest wedding websites and planning, said the industry expects a slight increase in marriage spending this year. Weddings are back to more traditional and formal, and couples are likely to spend slightly more to put on a show.
But they remain firmly aware of the costs, in part because couples are older and are paying more for the wedding themselves, she said. (The average age is 28 a bride and groom 30, compared to the year 1950, when the bride was on average 20 and married 23).
"With older couples, you'll see that they contribute more to their own wedding, it's not just Dad cut a check at the end of the night," said Winikka. "And the couples go that they do not want to start married life in debt, so they choose to be smarter about how they spend.”
Jodie Badgley of La Jolla said she and her new husband, John Spanos, 31, tried to make financially thoughtful decisions about their June 18 wedding.
“A wedding is one of the most important days of your life, and you don’t want to think about money,” said Badgley, 29, who declined to discuss her wedding budget. “But in this day and age you do, so you stop and think about what really matters.”
For Badgley and Spanos, it was about family and guests. So they spent more on food and music, and less on things like flowers and limos.
“We wanted the wedding to be beautiful, but we didn’t want to be silly with the money,” said Badgley. “We tried to be smart and practical.
