Sniffing Glue & Ruling Reykjavik

Details emerged this week of how Iceland’s capital Reykjavik has been taken over a ‘gang of ex-punks, poets and pop stars ’ in a Guardian report analyzing the success of new political organization the ‘Best Party’.

The unconventional group apparently formed off the back of disillusionment with traditional politicians linked to the banking crash of 2008 which destroyed Iceland’s economy, standing for local elections for the first time last year.

Proposing policies including promising a ‘drug-free parliament within 10 years ’ and ‘to break all promises’ they were wildly successfully,  picking up 34.7% of the vote and propelling self-proclaimed ‘anarcho-surrealist’ Best Party frontman Jón Gnarr to become the city’s Mayor.

12 months on, the self-confessed ‘heavy teenage glue sniffer’ a nd still ardent fan of proto anarcho punk band Crass is making ‘a serious political difference’ , the Guardian reported.

“I just love fucking with narrow-minded people who take themselves too seriously,” Mr Gnarr told reporters , “I really like to irritate arrogant people, all those authoritarian people who want to control what we say and do.
