'Gardens in Bloom Tour' to showcase six residential sites
HARLEYSVILLE — Six gardens in the Perkiomenville and Pennsburg areas will be featured on a "Gardens in Bloom Tour" slated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The tour, sponsored by the Mennonite Heritage Center, Harleysville, will feature a variety of landscaping including perennial borders, annuals plantings and shaded woodland settings. On the day of the tour, tickets will be available for $20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mennonite Heritage Center and Brode and Brooks Inc. One garden site is set off the beaten path on an old farmette with a colonial barn and house. The gardens include annuals, perennials, mature trees and shrubs, as well as beds with boulders and ground covers. A small vegetable garden is close to the house, as well as a water feature on the porch and a pond out back.At the fourth garden, the property includes a quiet shade meditation garden with giant hostas, ferns and shade perennials. Full sun flower gardens are planted with perennials such daisies, coral bells, yarrow and other favorites designed to provide color throughout the growing season. Climbing red roses alternate with pink peonies and deep blue iris along a fence, and the patio garden is a special favorite of the hummingbirds and bumble bees. Five different magnolia varieties bloom throughout the season. Each piece is ready for staining, clear finish or simply leave natural. An oil finish or clear varnish with UV light protection will bring out the beauty of the grain and a bit of red tinge in the wood. If the Western Red Cedar is left natural, it will weather to an unpretentious gray.
Are you thinking about a finish? A very traditional rustic look can be done with polyurethane with UV light protection. This will slightly darken the wood while bringing out a bit of red tinge found in the grain. Stains are easy to apply, can come in almost any color and do look great. An alternative finish is an opaque stain, which looks like paint, but doesn’t chip or peel as can happen with paint. You should apply a finish that will waterproof the wood, and prevent water spots & stains from ruining the look of the wood. Please consult your local paint expert, as there are always new products coming onto the market.
