Remote Yolo winery aiming for a high profile

Tucked among the sloping hillsides of the Capay Valley, with a herd of purebred Texas longhorns grazing nearby, is perhaps the most unusual vineyard in the greater Sacramento area.

The Casey Flat Ranch wine estate, deep in Yolo County, has attracted some major players in the wine business, including Ursula Hermacinski. She's the former estate manager for the the elite Napa winery Screaming Eagle – which brought $1,700 for a single bottle from the 2001 vintage – and a wine auction figurehead who launched the wine departments for Christie's in New York and Los Angeles. Hermacinski serves as general manager and sales director for Casey Flat Ranch.

So what is it about this remote and fairly untested 24-acre vineyard that's attracting so much interest, especially from someone so well-versed in the world's most revered wines?

"It's the ability to create something new," said Hermacinski, looking over blocks of syrah and sauvignon blanc vines. "I wouldn't have left Screaming Eagle if I hadn't tasted these wines. We're making wines that wine collectors can consume daily."

Unlike the mortgage payment in a bottle a la Screaming Eagle, the wines from Casey Flat Ranch don't cost much more than a large pizza or two. The Open Range line from Casey Flat Ranch includes a $15 sauvignon blanc and a $18 red blend. An "estate" version of the sauvignon blanc costs $23, while an estate blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah is priced at $35 per bottle.

Casey Flat Ranch's vineyards were planted in 2004, but not without plenty of consultation. Crop Care Associates of Napa, which counts such blue-chip wineries as Harlan Estate and Abreu as clients, was hired to consult on Casey Flat Ranch's viticulture and predict which grapes might thrive best.

The Capay Valley was established as its own American Viticulture Area in 2002 and is home to a small handful of wineries, including Capay Valley Vineyards. As for this region's identity to the wider wine world, that's still a work in progress.

"When you say 'Yolo County,' no one knows what it means," said Hermacinski. "Is it syrah country? Our focus here is to find what will stick. This is such an unproven growing area."

The microclimate here can be especially challenging. Unlike in Clarksburg, where the Delta breezes offer a cooling effect, or Napa, where the marine layer rolls in, at Casey Flat Ranch the grapes don't get much relief from heat during the growing season.
