Three tied atop Kansas Senior Amateur
Former Kansas Amateur champion Bryan Norton was one of three players to fire a 1-under 70 Monday at Topeka Country Club to share the first-round lead in the 31st Kansas Senior Amateur.
Norton, of Mission Hills, was tied atop the leaderboard with Steve Newman, of Wichita, and Steve Groom, of Raytown, Mo. The trio held a one-shot lead on Arma's Joe Gorenc, who came in at even par.
Topeka's Mark Elliott was three shots back after carding a 2-over 73, tying him for seventh with four other golfers. Auburn's Tim Bervert posted a 75 and Topekans Patrick Anderson and Fran Matthias each shot 77s.
Eddie Shirron, of Topeka, was tied for the lead in the Gross/Net Division, shooting an 80. He was matched by Wichita's Mick Lynch. Topekan Craig Cooper was five shots back with an 85.
In the Super Senior Division, Olathe's Dick Landon fired a 73 to lead by two ahead of Lake Quivira's Don Cox and Manhattan's David Anderson. Topekan Bill McDonald was in fourth with a 76.
The start of the two-day tournament was delayed two hours by Monday's early rain. The tourney will conclude Tuesday at TCC.
