FRN awaits grant confirmation for new fiscal year

• Fowler gave an update on the Mason County Teen Court system. According to Fowler, there were two teen court cased conducted last week, which totals to 13 cases this year. There is still one case, which deals with underage tobacco consumption, that needs scheduled. Fowler said that due to the summer season case numbers will decrease, however, more student teen court participants are needed. Students can participate as attorneys or serve on the jury. Student participants will get community service hours. Any teens interested in participating in the teen court system, are asked to call Fowler at 304-593-0072. • Diana Riddle reported on the current status of the Mason County Anti-Drug Coalition. According to Riddle, the coalition’s grant will end June 30. Starting July 1, the Mason County Health Department will no longer be the coalition’s fiscal agent. Riddle announced that Valley Health Systems has agreed to take over as the coalition’s fiscal agent. Riddle also updated FRN members on the projects that the coalition has completed this year, which includes their Sticker Shock Campaign. The Sticker Shock Campaign promotes awareness that it is illegal to both buy and sell alcohol for minors. According to Riddle, as part of the Sticker Shock Campaign coalition members went to six different establishments in Mason County and placed awareness stickers on 1,800 cases of beer. This was done during the week of local high school graduations. Aside from Sticker Shock, the coalition recently distributed 200 free prescription medication lock boxes to local residents. In addition, Riddle announced that the coalition is still promoting their “Stay Strong, Live Proud” motto. • Stewart reported that the Summer Reading Program at Leon is currently underway. The program, which runs two days a week and has a “Mad Scientist” theme, has averaged about 70-80 students per day. Stewart also reported that the Universal Summer Feeding Program is currently taking place at select schools. Through the program all children under age 18 eat breakfast and lunch for free, while adults can pay $2 per meal. According to the annual survey of state-funded preschool programs, “West Virginia is currently ranked third nationally for the percentage of four year olds enrolled in pre-K, stepping up two notches from last year. The state also ranked in the Top 10 for percentage of three year olds enrolled in state-funded preschool. In addition, West Virginia ranked 10th in the nation in terms of spending per child in pre-K, moving up from 13th last year. And West Virginia’s pre-K program met eight of 10 quality standards benchmarks, gaining one benchmark over the previous year as the provision of meals is now one of the standards.” The ‘make-up’ day for preschool screening has been set for Friday, June 3 at the Early Education Station. The program is for students who are age four by Sept. 1. A child who is three can be screened to determine if they are eligible. Parents need to take a the following to the preschool screening: child’s birth certificate; income verification; child’s shot records; and a 1040, W2, payment history from DHHR, TANF, social security, or pay stubs.
