Heat gets a jump on summer this weekend

The news

The high temperature in Greater Lafayette is expected to reach 92 today -- with heat index above that.

If that happens, it will be the hottest it has been in the area so far this year.

The heat index could approach triple digits in the southern part of Indiana as well as Kentucky.

What does 'Heat Index' mean?

That's how hot it actually feels outside, said National Weather Service meteorologist Sonia Flechtner. Weather officials calculate the heat index based on the actual temperature and the relative humidity.

Be prepared

Lafayette physician Matthew Schwartz recommends everyone stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, from around 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. He also advises those who must be outside to wear hats, drink plenty of fluids and not overexert themselves.

Sunscreen is also a must, Schwartz said, even if the sun is hidden by clouds.

"You can get sunburned even on a cloudy day if you're fair-skinned," he said.

How hot has it been?

According to the weather service, there have been three days above 90 degrees and five above 85 degrees in Greater Lafayette since the beginning of May, with two of those 90 degree-plus days occurring over the Memorial Day weekend.

The normal high temperature for today's date is 80.

Quotable

"I bike 2 1/2 miles to and from work each day. But it's short enough that I'm not worried," said Zoe Neal, owner of Virtuous Cycles on Main Street in downtown Lafayette. He will be at work today.

"I'll be heading to work pretty early and leaving late. So I'll probably miss the brunt of (the heat)," Neal said.

The forecast

The National Weather Service forecast for Greater Lafayette calls for sunny skies today, with a 30 percent chance of rain this afternoon, increasing to a 40 percent chance tonight.

Highs today should be 92 and lows tonight in the mid-60s.

There's a decreasing chance of showers on Sunday. It should be mostly sunny and cooler, with highs in the mid-80s.

Cooling from evaporation lowers the temperature and the depressed wet-bulb reading is used to calculate dew point and humidity. When the relative humidity is 100 percent, the wet bulb, dry bulb and dew point temperatures are the same.

To reduce the chance of damaging the plant when using horticultural oil, spray in the early morning or on cloudy days when the relative humidity is low to moderate and the temperature is between 40 degrees and 70 degrees.

MEP Tools – ASHRAE 55 Compliance (Reference) | iPad Apps

MEP Tools - ASHRAE 55 Compliance is an app that you can use in order to document compliance with ASHRAE Standard 55 - 2004. This app will evaluate a number of space types for your project and give you the results in email format so that you can submit your results for LEED purposes. After you enter the Space Temperature, MRT Temperature, Air Velocity, Relative Humidity, Metabolic Rate (MET), and Clothing Level (CLO), the app will calculate the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Dissatisfied (PPD) values for each season, for each space, and document wether the space is in compliance with the ASHRAE Standard. You may then email the results for the entire project to yourself and submit the information for the LEED review for Indoor Environmental Quality credit 7.1 (IEQc7.1).
