Purdue's hardcourt legacy hard to top
Headliner: Men's basketball. The Boilermakers have had a long tradition on the hardcourt, dating to the days when John Wooden starred in West Lafayette, Ind. But much of Purdue's basketball legacy lately should be credited to coach Gene Keady, who managed to keep the program relevant despite playing second fiddle to powerhouse rival Indiana. The Boilers haven't reached a Final Four since 1980, which taints their résumé a bit from a national perspective. But they're not without several other accomplishments: a league-leading 22 Big Ten titles; 28 players named All-Americans; 25 NCAA tournament appearances; 13 consecutive first-round NCAA tourney wins; and two No. 1 overall NBA draft picks.
Heartbreaker: It was 2004. ESPN's “College GameDay” was in town for the first time. Purdue's football team was undefeated and ranked in the Top 10, fresh off streak-ending wins at Notre Dame and at Penn State. Quarterback Kyle Orton was even in the early Heisman race. But Wisconsin played spoiler, beating the Boilers 20-17. It was the start of a four-game skid for Purdue, which hasn't been in the national spotlight since.
History-maker: In 1996, Purdue clinched an outright Big Ten regular-season basketball championship for the third year in a row, a feat that had been accomplished only once in league history. The Boilermakers compiled a record of 80-18 in that span, though they reached the Sweet 16 only once.
Nebraska connection: KK Houser, a standout at Lincoln Southeast, plays for the Purdue women's basketball team. Houser, a sophomore, redshirted this season after suffering a knee injury in the season opener. … Former Nebraska defensive backs coach Phil Elmassian joined the Purdue staff this winter. He'll be coaching the linebackers.
Did you know? Hundreds of Purdue students rioted on campus after the women's basketball team won its first national title in 1999. Dumpsters were burned. Tear gas was deployed. Arrests were made. Similar pandemonium occurred after the men's team lost in the Elite Eight in 2000 and after the women lost the national title game in 2001.
Battling Big Red: Nebraska and Purdue have met once on the football field (a 28-0 Purdue win in 1958). Nebraska has played the Boilermakers four times in men's hoops, winning once in 1966. The Huskers' 78-56 loss in 1979 came against a Purdue team that eventually reached the Final Four.

Four women's teams earn final spots in 24-team Umag main draw for ...
Umag, Croatia, June 22, 2011—Rising above the rest, four women’s beach volleyball teams endured blazing sunshine in a picture post-card setting along the Adriatic Sea, advancing through three qualifying rounds Wednesday to advance to the 24-team main draw at the 2011 FIVB Beach Vollwyball Swatch World Championships, the 10th annual event for players under 19, which is being held through Sunday at the impressive ATP Stadion-Umag, a professional tennis complex nestled around a lagoon on the shore of the Adriatic Sea.
Four men’s tandems also advanced Wednesday in the double-gender event to the 24-team men’s main draw, which will also start with two days of round-robin pool play on Thursday and Friday and two days of single-elimination bracket play on Saturday and Sunday. The semifinals will conclude Saturday’s schedule in the evening, and the medal matches for each gender will be played on Sunday night on the ATP Stadion-Umag center court.
Joining the 20 pre-seeded teams to complete the final field for the quest for the gold in Umag are teams from France’s 12th-seeded qualification team of Pauline Martin/Lisa Menet-Haure, Kazakhstan’s 10th-seeded Lyubov Bogatu/Bakhtygul Samalikova, Lithuania’s 14th-seeded Ieva Dumbauskaite/Monika Povilaityte and Poland’s ninth-seeded Marzena Kedzior/Paulina Stasiak. Poland now has two teams in the main draw as a total of 21 countries are represented among the men’s final 24 teams.
With all four advancing teams having to survive two rounds of qualification matches, France’s Martin/Menet-Haure advanced with wins over teams from Austria and Hungry, while Kazakhstan’s Bogatu/Samalikova won over teams from the Czech Republic and Italy (three sets). Lithuania’s Dumbauskaite/Povilaityte moved to the main draw with wins over teams from German (three sets) and Russia while Poland’s Kedzior/Stasiak earned their spot in the main draw by defeating teams from Canada and the United States.
Gathered in Umag for this year’s event are 73 teams (38 men and 35 women) from 29 countries. With 20 teams in each gender pre-seeded into their respective main draws, qualification tournaments were held Wednesday to determine the final four main draw spots. The 24 teams have been divided into six four-team pools for round-robin play on Thursday and Friday with the top two teams in each pool along with the best four third place teams advancing to the single-elimination bracket phase that will begin on Saturday.
