Coffee can raise cholesterol - but not much
Q. I've read that something in coffee raises cholesterol. I also read that using a filter to prepare the coffee blocks this compound. I guess if I drink instant coffee, I'm raising my LDL cholesterol. Is that true?
A. It depends somewhat on how much you drink. The cholesterol-raising compounds in coffee, cafestol and kahweol, are found in very low levels in instant coffee and in filtered coffee (Food and Chemical Toxicology, June 1997).
Most of the early research connecting coffee consumption and elevated cholesterol found that traditional "boiled" coffee made in the Scandinavian or Turkish styles could raise serum cholesterol significantly (New England Journal of Medicine, June 16, 1983).
Twenty years later, however, researchers in Sweden found that filtered coffee could raise serum cholesterol more than previously appreciated (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, September 2003). Other researchers found that five cups of instant coffee daily could result in a small but significant increase in cholesterol (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, October 1995). Drinking a few cups of instant coffee is not likely to change your cholesterol dramatically.
Q. Do you have a diet for helping me survive omeprazole detox? Your book "Best Choices" alerted me to the dangers of the drug, and I want to end my addiction.
When I forgot to take the drug two days in a row, I experienced heartburn hell. Earlier, I tried to take myself off the drug, but I could only stand it for a week. Now I can't skip one day without wanting to die.
A. Stopping powerful acid-suppressing drugs like omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium) and lansoprazole (Prevacid) can be tough. In one study, even people who never had heartburn before developed it upon stopping this type of medication (Gastroenterology, July 2009).
A low-carb diet can be helpful. So can remedies like almonds, broccoli, "Digestive Tea," "Ginger Pickle" and "Persimmon Punch." We are sending you our new book, "The People's Pharmacy Quick and Handy Home Remedies," for details on all of these. Others may send $16.95 (plus $4 S&H) to:

Q. I've been on simvastatin (80 mg) for several years. I've had serious problems with leg cramps, and now my tendons are affected from my toes to my knees. Could the medication be responsible?

Be sure to stay through to the very end with the credits rolling, where Cho plays the guitar, “because I saw Madonna doing it,” about fucking someone ugly “for four years” and “sex with you just makes me want to die.” Uproarious!

But with hindsight it is plain to me that you can be very serious about your wanting to die, having taken all matters into account – and most of those around me thought I was absolutely in my right mind – then later discover that you very nearly made a

HPV Forum: 21 and wanting to die
Tired:
I promise you, this is not the end of your world. Consider all that you have one so far and all that you will do as a nurse. Your life is much too important to waste; your positive influence is rippling through every one around you an all of those people who need your nursing skills will be lost without you. This virus has nothing to do with you as a person and does not discriminate for any reason.
Although nobody can completely identify with another's feelings, I do empathize with what you are going through. Being in the health fild myself, I struggled on may nights to reconcile how I could help people achieve health when I was sick in some way. I felt hypocritical , dirty and ashamed. I, too, am a driven achiever and wondered why I got this virus when I tried so hard to be the best person that I could be in all aspects of life. I do not know. Everyone has their own beliefs and I am not about to project any of my truths on another. However, I slowly began to realize that my experience with this illness could help me to help others. I understand the pain and frustration of patients dealing with HPV, I dare say, better that many other colleagues. My hope is, in time, you will use this experience in your own work.
Your situation is not hopeless and by getting this treated now, you have a much better chance of clearing the virus from your system. Take good care of yourself, eat well, exercise, avoid smoking and excess drinking. You want your immune system to function in top form.
Do not beat yourself up over this. You did nothing wrong and do not 'deserve' this despite the thoughts racing through your mind right now. I sincerely care about you and want nothing but the best outcome for you. If you need to talk, I am here!
i was in suicide mode the moment i found out i had hpv.... i can't work, and when i got home i was in front of the computer researching for hours and hours.... i would go out sit by the lake for hours just staring at the water alone... i was stressed out and depressed for days...
but ya it only lasted for around a week. what you need to do now is for sure, think positive. i started saying to myself, look on this forum, there are so many of us here that are going through the same thing. i'm going to beat this.
next thing you need to do is to get healthy. take vitimins and supplements, exercise, think positive.
i am now much more aware of my health than ever.
