A spontaneous concert

I first met Dick Zamora about 1949 when the Upsilon Sigma Phi Fraternity toured their daring original (Filipino) musical Aloyan to Iloilo. As a kid, I was ever so impressed because I had just enjoyed Till the Clouds Roll by . Therefore, I associated composers with Jerome Kern. I had also been impressed by the works of Rodgers, Friml, Foster and Abelardo, Molina and Santiago. I joined the fraternity in 1958 and was cast in an original musical, Interior #14 , composed by Dick himself. Director Bobby Montelibano rehearsed us for months. Sigma Delta Phi members were the women in the Nats Vergara-Teddy Gonzaga-Dick Zamora musical. The next head, Christian Monsod, who wrote the lyrics for "In the Hastening Evening Hue" for Winnie Collas, decided to follow the footsteps of Aloyan and tour Bicol, Iloilo and Bacolod. The fraternity was actively involved in original musicals, jazz concerts and choral events. Dick was thus an ever-present alumnus who conducted the Upsilon choir for the choral contests as well as our serenades and Christmas caroling. We often worked together. Soon, we were brods-colleagues as I, following their eminent footsteps and directed campus plays and musicals. I asked Dr. Lester Garcia to please look after him. Fortunately, we had a staff meeting for the affair so I asked Cecile de Joya (whose parents Dick knew), Emlyn Olfindo Santos, Joey Nombres (the light designer who knew Dick), and Eldrin Veloso, our faithful stage manager, to visit Dick with me. Emlyn sang her Tagalog version of "Prayer" which made Dick weep. We met with the cast the next night so I asked Joseph Olfindo and Dondi Ong to visit Dick since Dick has sentimental attachments to both singers. Joseph was in the 1975 Aloyan version which was presented at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, whereas Dondi recorded Zamora songs for a Mon Abad-produced CD launched in Paco Cemetery three years ago. They rendered "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" with zeal and sincerity. Dick was so thrilled when Joseph decided to jazz up "When You’re Away." After Dondi and Joseph did their upbeat version of the ballad, Dick commented, "I didn’t realize that a 61-year-old could still sound new." They entered Dick’s room singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow." (The Garland classic brought tears to Dick’s eyes. Mine, too.

With its storyline inspired by the gambling episode in The Mahabharata, A Throw of Dice has been described by the composer as “a cross between Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille and an early Bollywood movie.” Sawhney's score seamlessly bridges East and West:

Another distinguished son of Malabon: Epifanio de los Santos

When the Philippine Revolution broke out in 1896, Don Panyong, together with his close friend Clemente Jose Zulueta, published a patriotic newspaper in Malabon named "Libertad."  The publication was short-lived, however, because the revolutionary government suppressed it after the publication of its first and only issue.  He then joined General Antonio Luna in publishing another paper, "La Independencia."  Don Panyong also became a member of the Malolos Congress. He was a gifted musician - a fine pianist and a superb guitarist.  During his time, he was one of the three outstanding guitarists of the Philippines, the other two being General Francisco Canon, a revolutionary hero, and Guillermo Tolentino, a distinguished sculptor.  He also had a talent for painting, having spent a great deal of time painting during his ten years at the Ateneo.  Don Panyong was considered to be the foremost literary figure of his country and no less than Cecilio Apostol acknowledged him as one of the two best  Filipino writers of Spanish prose in the Philippines.  The other was Marcelo del Pilar.  The first Filipino of native parentage to become a member of the Spanish Royal Academy in Madrid, he was known in Europe as the leading philologist and writer of biographical and historical matters about the Philippines. In 1925  Governor-General Leonard Wood appointed Don Panyong to become director of the National Library and Museum.  He accepted the position because of the honor attached to the chair; it was traditionally occupied only by scholars, men of learning and erudition.  He held this position until his sudden death from cerebral attack on April 18, 1928. I believe God has dreams for me, and He enkindles in me the passion to follow this dream. Life to me then, is about following my passion...that thing that gets me up in the morning, excited. And lets me go to bed at night, content. Or it can let me go to bed, still excited. Everything else in-between are just there allowed by God to teach me to be patient and to grow, as I follow where His fire takes me... to His dream for me...
