A church reborn: Memorial Presbyterian to serve community and host worship

The sign in front of the former Memorial Presbyterian Church still states "Sunday Worship Come Join Us."

But another sign was placed in front of that one several months ago. It states "For Sale."

The most recent sign, however, is a sign of hope for the large, nearly century-old building and the surrounding neighborhood.

That sign, stating "under agreement," references the new life planned for the church, at 420-428 S. Queen St.

Light of Hope and the affiliated Lancaster Community Services Organization plan to acquire the building as soon as this fall.

As soon as January, the back part of the church, with a large parking lot off Beaver Street, will be renovated for use as offices, counseling areas and meeting rooms for groups working on anti-gang programs, resettling refugees and helping former prison inmates return to society.

The sanctuary of the 7,648-square-foot building will remain a church — not for one congregation, but for two or three. Those groups will meet at different times and utilize the building as they grow, become established and possibly move off to their own church buildings, said Robert Doe, an elder and missions director of In the Light Ministries.

In the Light, at 415 S. Shippen St., is one of four neighborhood congregations that established Light of Hope a decade ago. The others are Crossroads Mennonite, Lords House of Prayer and Puerto de Refugio.

"The vision of these ministries working together was already in existence," he said.

Jointly with the Lancaster County Council of Churches, Light of Hope formed the Lancaster Community Services Organization three years ago, Doe said.

Light of Hope has been active in prison ministry and, in more recent years, working with partners to provide re-entry management outside of the prison, said Doe, who previously was the prison's medical director. Those programs provided drug addiction and mental health counseling.

The group also has been involved in the annual Family Fest in Reservoir Park and other events.

Internationally, Light of Hope has sponsored mission trips to establish a hospital in the Kurdish region of Iraq.

In the renovated church space, Light of Hope will provide mental health counseling. Other still undetermined groups will provide drug addiction counseling, refugee settlement services and gang prevention programs for neighborhood youth, he said.

Light of Hope received a variance from the city Zoning Hearing Board on Monday to use that part of the building for the social service offices.

Debate for or against the sale of the churches of France ...

The Church of St. Francis de Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy was deserted by its followers, its maintenance costs had become unbearable under the denier of religion, and the municipality could not afford to racheterl’édifice. .. So, death in the soul, the Bishop of Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) decided to sell. And the recipient happens to be a full sponsor of ideas more or less sacrilegious.

“We’ve sold this church in 2007 (…) because there has been an evolving practice and Neighbourhood today, only a few hundred faithful go there, then it can accommodate over 700 people, “said the Bursar of the Diocese of Nancy, Michel Petitdemange” in the columns of Le Figaro. This deacon, father of 4 children, which deals with the dioceses of Nancy and Saint-Die, says the sales agreement was signed in January with the SNC Stanislaus, a developer who intends to turn, when the sale will be confirmed After three months, the church … mall.

“There is little reason for the sale does not happen, says the Republican is priced at € 1,350,000, more than double what had thought to put the municipality Vandoeuvre February 23, 2009, when she voted to purchase the property, after negotiation with the diocesan commission. The case was stalled because there was no draft back and € 710 000 is a large sum …»

priests and parishioners have been consulted and the decision to “sell to preserve” was taken by the majority. The building was built in the 60s by architect Henri Prouvé and the people of Nancy did not want to see resolve to destroy this piece of their heritage. “At St. Theresa Villers, where the same question was asked, a majority of parishioners opposed the sale, and it did not happen,” said the deacon at the local newspaper. Act of 1905 and the sale of churches

In fact, this type of transaction is possible only if the building was built after 1905, when the law of separation of church and state. Article 2 stipulates that the Republic relegating faith to the private sphere and does not fund worship on its territory.

Under this Act, “religious buildings (synagogues or churches) built before 1905 have become state property, which lends free of charge to churches, says the site of Europe 1. In fact, the state is required to fund the restoration and maintenance of buildings at its own expense. With the exception of operating costs, the work is therefore the responsibility of communities. Hence the proliferation of local referendums to launch a rehabilitation, as Plounérin in the Cotes d’Armor, or decide on a possible “deconstruction”, as in Saint-Chamond in the Loire. A scenario that was eventually dismissed.
