Plenty customers but prices ease
THERE was another good sale of stock at Macroom Mart on Saturday last with plenty of customers in attendance for all cattle on offer.
Overall the prices paid were not quite as strong as previous weeks, but with the best of the forward bullocks making up to €500 over and up to €408 over being paid for good forward heifers, any perceived difference may be down to smaller numbers and quality.
The heavy bullocks were scarce. Forward lots sold for €307 over to €500 over, medium weights making €270 over to €447 over, while the lighter store bullocks sold for €250 over to €445 over.
In the heifer section, the heavier heifers sold for €295 over to €408 over, forward lots making €245 over to €394 over, while the lighter stores sold for €215 over to €360 over.
A Hereford weighing 560kg sold for €930, two Charolais weighing 442kg sold for €850 and three Limousin weighing 396kg made €990.
A very firm trade for dry cows continued with the heavier quality cows in particular in much demand. The prices ranged €200 under for the light stores to €330 over for the heavy quality cows.
There is a smaller number of calves on offer now that the peak of the season has well passed. Demand continues for calves suitable for export and from farmer customers.
Friesian bulls sold for €101/head to €160/head for the bulls most suited to the export market, while farmer customers paid up to €310/head for strong calves. Hereford and Angus bulls ranged €165/head €345/head. Continental breed bulls ranged €270/head to €345/head.

Friday night was full of meeting and greeting with plenty of Hereford breeders and buyers. We had a delicious steak dinner as I sat with some old Texas friends and new ones that I made. They auctioned off numerous embryos at the dinner that night. Some were sold at the dinner and some online. All of the embryos being sold online made me think of how far technology has come. I mean really, there’s more opportunity for others to get what they desire even if they are unable to attend the function. I find it fascinating! Family as well as the Star Lake Cattle Ranch Crew.
