Punchless Isotopes fall into first-place tie
The Albuquerque Isotopes coughed up sole possession of first place in a 2-1 loss to the host Oklahoma City RedHawks on Wednesday night.
Albuquerque (37-29) is now tied atop the American South Division with Round Rock (37-29), which beat Nashville 4-3 in 10 innings.
The Isotopes mustered just one double and five singles in the loss. The RedHawks (29-38) retired them in order in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Albuquerque had baserunners in the third — A.J. Ellis drew a two-out walk —and the seventh — Russ Mitchell hit a two-out single — but did nothing with them.
Oklahoma City scored all the runs it would need in the first inning. J.B. Shuck led off with a double, but the next two hitters were retired before Robinson Cancel delivered an RBI single up the middle.
After Tommy Manzella drew a walk, Koby Clemens doubled through the left side for a 2-0 lead.
The Isotopes got off to a good start in the second inning as Jerry Sands doubled and advanced to third on an error. But the next two batters went down weakly before Jamie Hoffmann managed to reach on an infield single that scored Sands.
That would be it for Albuquerque as Andy Van Hekken (1-3) was dominant for seven innings, allowing just the one unearned run, plus three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Jose Valdez picked up his fifth save with the scoreless ninth.
Dana Eveland (6-4) was a tough-luck loser for Albuquerque, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six in six innings.
The Isotopes will finish their series with the RedHawks on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. They will then return home to start an eight-game homestand against Iowa on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
