Albanese Awarded Music Scholarship

Albanese is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Albanese.

The award was the 20th made by the foundation in honor of musician Eric Donoghue in the eight years since his death.

Earlier, the 19th scholarship was presented to Kestrel Curro of Leonardo, a clarinetist who is graduating from Middletown High School South.

Albanese played tenor sax and drums at Hudson and was a talented singer and actor. He has been a member of the 7th and 8th grade band, the high school Symphonic Band, the Marching Band, the Jazz Ensemble and the Rock Band. He also sang with the Rock Ensemble, the Men’s Glee Club, Hudson Harmony and has been a member of the A Cappella Choir for six years.

He soloed with “Oh Holy Night” at the Winter Concert and performed in several musicals including “Back to the 80s,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Cinderella.”

He has played professionally since he was in fifth grade.

Albanese, called a “natural-born musician” by retiring music director G. Thomas Elliott, has joined the Natural Guard and then plans on continuing his music studies and performances in college.

Eric Donoghue, who was raised in Atlantic Highlands, was a 1989 graduate of Henry Hudson Regional and attended Berkelee College of Music in Boston.

At the time of his death he was the organist at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church and before that at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlantic Highlands. In addition to the keyboardist's church work, he played in several Central Jersey jazz and rock bands was a composer and piano teacher.

Albanese takes what are typically grandiose landscapes - from mountain ranges to tornadoes to Martian landscapes - shrinks them down to miniature and then photographs them. The size and materials used, with the peculiar depth and textures those provide, help to add elements of fantasy and playfulness to what might normally be mundane landscapes. Toting the line between photography and illustration, you can't help but to wonder what Albanese's worlds are made of.
