The world awaits the Big Bear Class of 2011
On June 17 more than 200 young Big Bearians came of age. It was graduation day at Big Bear High School, and the Class of 2011—or the double ones as they like to be known—can put away childish things and go out into the world as the newest generation of young adults.
Teacher Mike Hahn, who started teaching at the high school the same year this class entered as freshmen, reflected on the past four years. He was selected by the senior class to deliver the keynote speech. “You are a big-hearted class,” Hahn said. “The biggest-hearted class that I have ever had.”
Nicole Stayer, Sierra Hood, Angela Wilson, Caitlyn Rich, William Hawkins, Nick Topoleski and Adrian Sarabia serenaded their fellow seniors following Hahn’s speech. Sarabia earned a standing ovation with his entertaining rap honoring his fellow classmates.
Valedictorians Roy Bowling, William Gaines, Tanner Sizemore and Danielle Carson each had a chance to speak, Bowling going first. “Stand proud and have the courage to strive for a better tomorrow,” Bowling said.
“We laughed together, usually for no reason at all. We cried together, again for nothing. And we’ve grown up together. And that was something,” Gaines said.
Sizemore talked about the memories he will never forget, including having a bottom locker all four years. “Three people got the locker above me, not one of them over 5 feet tall,” the 6-foot-plus tall Sizemore said, drawing laughs from the crowd. “I loved coming in every Monday knowing we would be regaled by Mr. (Joe) Bradley’s surf report and near misses with great white sharks.”
And Carson, the only girl in the esteemed group of four, urged everyone to enjoy life, whatever comes their way. “Don’t make partying your life,” Carson said. “Instead, make life a party.”
The Class of 2011, all 204 in cap and gown, crossed the stage that sunny Friday evening, accepted their diplomas, ready to face the what the world beyond Big Bear has to offer.
