Stella Needs Some Gentle Expertise
Stella is a one-year-old iguana. She is fairly calm and tolerant of being handled, but will need consistent, gentle handling to remain this way. Iguanas can grow up to six feet and require large enclosures, high temperatures, expensive lighting setups and specialized diets. Iguanas do not make great pets for young children because they are fragile, can cause injury when frightened and potentially carry salmonella. For an experienced, adult owner, however, Stella would be a great addition. If you are interested in adopting Stella, contact the Rhode Island SPCA today at (401) 438-8150.

Habitat conditions: The habitat of iguana should have more or less the following sizes: in the event that will be occupied by a young iguana (those with less than 18 months) should be 80 cm. long and 70 cm. wide by 100 cm high. If an adult iguana that you are going to live, that is, more than three years, the carrier measured 3 m. long by 1.5 m. wide and 2 m. high.It must also have a heating plate, a fluorescent tube, UVB ray emitter, a container for food and another for water, being this large enough to allow the iguana to bathe in it. Fluorescent tubes are used to successfully synthesize the lizard vitamin D3. It is also well to set into the habitat some dead branches for the iguana could climb them.
Temperature and humidity:With regard to household temperature of this animal, throughout the day should range between 28 º C and 32 º C and during the night between 19 º C and 25 º C. To achieve these high temperatures in the winter, there are numerous models of heaters. Sometimes it is advisable to avoid the use of heating stones in the habitat of iguana , as they can reach 40 º C, which adversely affect the health of the reptile. Before introducing the final shape to the iguana in a habitat, you have to test the heating equipment. This is due to electrical errors may be develop. To turn the heating off and on can be used a timer. On the other hand, must be located in a quiet and illuminated place. If the sun’s light is not adequate, we must resort to artificial one. This is due to the iguana may think that winter is coming and begin their hibernation. The humidity must be 60% or 70%, which is easily accomplished by spraying water directly into the habitat. Finally, to get proper ventilation, you have to set the top of something like mesh.
How to Handle an Iguana:It is possible to train an iguana. However, it can be dangerous, must take into account a number of recommendations. For example, when you have to lift the animal has to be stuck on the abdomen and legs. Never hold it by the tail, since it has the ability to discard it, although the tail would grow (not as much as before), it could become infected. It is not often that an iguana tries to bite someone: If an iguana does so it is because he feels threatened. In these cases it is advisable to put them in black cloth over his head to make them calm. The same happens with the scratches. Its claws can be cut to prevent the occurrence of accident.Normally, iguanas are not usually aggressive after a process of domestication. However, in some special circumstances may no longer see their anger, especially males. One way to combat it is proportional to a plastic doll during the mating season.Treating the hostility:When it seems that there is no alternative, is often used the castration, although not scientifically proven that this operation is effective in limiting aggressiveness. The best time to carry it out is the maturity of the animal. Sometimes the lack of hormones result of castration prevents the iguana to develop normally. One way to overcome the evil genius of this reptile is not being so hostile. Therefore, we must look at him from the front side and take him by the belly that fits in the hand and arm as if to hang on the branch of a tree. We should not grab the iguana by the neck as would do it the predators. In addition, these animals have a kind of ‘third eye’ overhead allows them to see predators as they approach from above, if the owner of the Iguana is coming from above, will become your enemy.
