Lifespan of Calico Cats - Bright Hub

There’s no question about it – calico cats are beautiful, loving animals. Owners of these gorgeous cats might find themselves asking, “How long do calico cats live?” It’s completely natural to wonder how long your fur-baby will be with you. Here’s some useful information that might set your mind at ease.

The first thing to understand is that the term “calico” refers to the type and color of a cat’s coat; it is not the name of an actual breed. To be considered a calico cat, a cat’s fur must have the colors black, white and orange. A calico cat is virtually guaranteed to be a female, because of their genetic make-up. It is possible to have a calico male, but they are very rare, and sterile.

Indoor cats typically have a longer lifespan than do outdoor cats. There are many reasons for this, including the fact that outdoor cats are more liable to get hit by vehicles, get in cat fights and contract serious diseases, either from other cats or from prey like rodents and birds.

The average lifespan of a domestic calico cat is about 16 years, and they go through three stages: kittenhood, adolescence and adulthood, and lastly, maturity.

Calico kittens are born blind and deaf. They are pitifully helpless at this point, because their legs cannot support their body weight. The mother cat keeps her kittens safe by making sure her “nest” (or whichever space she chooses to give birth in the house) is safe from predators, and she licks her kittens thoroughly to make sure they are clean and free from disease. During this time, the kittens gain 3 ounces per week.

Ever wonder why your calico kneads you when you’re petting her? The behavior starts in early kittenhood, when kittens knead their mother’s bellies to assist in milk production. As they get older, kittens continue this practice for comfort (much like human babies derive comfort from sucking!).

When calico kittens can walk on their own, at about 3 weeks of age, and grow teeth, their mothers begin to wean them. They also learn how to use a litter box and cover up their waste from their mothers. As their ears and eyes begin to work, they start using their tails to practice balancing.

Most calico kittens are given away to their new homes at 8 weeks of age, but the optimal time to re-home these kittens is about 12 weeks. This gives them ample time to become independent of their mother, and also to socialize with their siblings and the humans with whom they live.
