Old programs get new life online

We see it whenever the newest Grand Theft Auto video game or Steve Jobs' next iGadget is released to lines at stores and a rapturous reception from fans.

Geeks love to have the latest incarnation of their smart phone, video-game system or other personal technology.

Except, as Alexander Levine has learned, sometimes they don't.

The University at Buffalo student has a small but growing computer software business devoted to the idea that newer isn't necessarily better.

"It still runs. It still does what it needs to do. If it ain't broke, don't fix it," said Levine, 22, a fifth-year senior. He was referring to his Dell Latitude laptop, but he could have been talking about his 1996 Toyota Corolla or his business mantra.

OldVersion.com , which he and a partner started when Levine was 12, offers for download old forms of software programs that date to the early 1990s.

The site appeals to users who are more comfortable with the older version of a program, whose computer or operating system isn't compatible with the new version or who think the older version is better.

"I think that's pretty impressive," said Paul Fanara, president and founder of Aspire Technology Solutions in Buffalo. "He's just got entrepreneurial spirit. Obviously, it showed at a young age."

Levine hasn't made Facebook-type money from the business, but he has raised enough from ads on the site to pay his tuition and living expenses while in college.

He can't charge users to download the software because of licensing issues, but the site makes money from ads.

"Even Microsoft advertises on our site," Levine said.

Now, he and his new partner are expanding the site, making it easier to accept contributed programs and hoping to build an online software museum."Software is one of the biggest industries in the world, and we need to salvage its history," said Travis Dane, Levine's partner, who lives in England.

Levine was inspired to delve into old software programs in 2001, when he was in middle school. The native of Russia, who moved to the United States with his family when he was 5 or 6, lived near Syracuse and had a precocious desire to succeed online.

His earliest ideas fizzled -- a couple of them drew the ire of larger companies that had teams of lawyers at their disposal -- and Levine realized that coming up with an original concept would be better.
