Around the schools
Six high school students in the Alamance-Burlington School System were recognized during a school board meeting last week after being chosen to attend the 2011 Governor’s School of North Carolina.
After the current school year ends on June 10, the students will head on June 12 to a six-week residential study program at either Meredith College in Raleigh or Salem College in Winston-Salem.
Students chosen for Governor’s School include:
n Karla Allen from Southern Alamance High School, who will study dance.
n Haley Grafton from Southern Alamance High School, who will study natural science.
n Marc Gutierrez from Williams High School, who will study natural science.
n Paige Forsyth from Western Alamance High School, who will study English.
n Tess Boyle from Williams High School, who will study English.
n Julianne Blackburn from Williams High School, who will study instrumental music/viola.
Governor’s School started in 1963. It is the oldest statewide summer residential program in the country for academically gifted students.
THE ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON School System received three gifts this month that will benefit students:
n Allen Tate Realtors of Burlington gave $1,920 that will support homeless students in different schools in the system.
n LabCorp of Burlington gave $5,000 to buy SmartBoards and computers for Garrett Elementary School.
n Alamance Regional Medical Center donated an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to South Mebane Elementary School. The device, valued at $1,700, will be used to help a student with a heart condition if emergency situations happen.

Amanda Renea Gerringer and Luke Alexander Moffett were married at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Altamahaw Baptist Church, Elon. Dr. Steve Tucker officiated, and music was by Teresa Jasper, pianist, and Hilda McKinney, Bethany Loy, Kellie Satterfield, and Brad Young, all soloists.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Gerringer of Burlington. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Haizlip and Mr. and Mrs. George Gerringer, all of Elon, and the great-granddaughter of Annie Haizlip of Elon.
The groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Joel Moffett of Gibsonville. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moffett of Burlington.
Escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore an A-line gown with beaded, corded lace and a chapel train. She carried a bouquet of gerbera daisies and delphiniums.
Maid of honor was Ivey Huey of Burlington. Bridesmaids were Allison Vidana of Morrisville, sister of the groom, Natalie Hinton of Elon, Holli Jacobs of Pembroke, and Samantha Osborne of Greensboro. Junior bridesmaids were Paige Haizlip and Casey Haizlip, both of Elon and cousins of the bride.
The groom’s father served as best man. Groomsmen were Jason Moffett of High Point, brother of the groom, Craig Gerringer of Richmond, Va., brother of the bride, Eric Vidana of Morrisville, brother-in-law of the groom, and Michael Zalimeni of Mebane. Ushers were Trey Daniel of Burlington, cousin of the bride, and Brady Swing of Raleigh.
Tracie Chrismon of Browns Summit served as wedding director. Program attendant was Lauren Breedlove of Cary, and guest registrar was Kerri Weatherly of Elon.
The groom’s parents entertained with a rehearsal dinner at The Cutting Board, Burlington. Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents entertained with a reception at The Diamond Room, Gibsonville.
The bride graduated from Western Alamance High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
The groom graduated from Western Alamance High School and UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. He is a computer software engineer at Fidelity Investments, Research Triangle Park.
The couple will live in Research Triangle Park.
