Building Report: Athens Chapel of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
ATHENS, Alabama -- New building: Athens Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1716 W. Market St. in Athens.http://mormon.org/ . Service Sundays at 9:30 a.m.
Community open house: Saturday, 4 p.m. Includes refreshments and demonstrations of congregational activities, including the new Family History Center, which is open to the community for genealogical research four days a week. Media preview begins at 3 p.m.
Congregational focus: The membership and size of the congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints within the Athens area has rapidly grown over the past few years to warrant expanding the building and chapel. The Athens-area chapel is one of more than 30,000 congregations worldwide.
The growth in the Athens area and around the world is in part due to the more than 52,000 missionaries currently serving in 350 missions locally and around the world.
Elder Tyler Falconbury from the Athens congregation is currently serving a mission in the French Colony of New Caledonia off the coast of Australia.
Missionaries serving in the Athens Ward are Elder Tyler J. Franklin from San Clemente, Calif., and Elder Parker David Blackhurst from Sandy, Utah.
Building project: The newly renovated and expanded $2 million structure will serve as the central meetinghouse for worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Members and visitors meet in our local congregation each Sunday to worship and learn.
Also, youth groups, Cub and Boy Scouts, Relief Society, single adults and others meet during the week for social, cultural or sports activities.
Family History Center: Additionally the Church has a state-of-the-art Family History Center that operates as a free community service. The use of this wonderful genealogy facility does not require Church membership and is open to the public Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon.
Specifications : 13,682 square feet that added six more classrooms (totaling 22), a large cultural hall, a full-sized basketball court and family history center.

Last week, the South Park creators’ Book of Mormon musical and the Tony awards got a lot of buzz in the media. This week, news in New York City (at least news related to Mormons) is more about the recently launched “I’m a Mormon” campaign. Times Square billboards, taxi cab tops, and subway ads are giving people a chance to learn a little more about Mormonism.
Of all the “ Mormon Moment ” media attention I’ve seen as of late, I think this Boston Globe article, Mormons’ Image Campaign , was one of the most well-written pieces. I appreciated Lisa Wangsness ‘s objective and respectful approach, and I think she did a nice job capturing some of the purposes of the Mormon.org campaign.
