Little-Known Black History Fact: Charlie 'The Tuna' Chapman
In 1981, Charles Chapman, also known as Charlie “The Tuna,” became the first African-American to swim across the English Channel. A member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Chapman learned to swim at the YMCA in his home state of New York. Also nicknamed Black Butterfly because of his powerful butterfly stroke, he was known to stay in the water all day practicing for his big competitions and dynamic swim challenges. Chapman held the world record for the butterfly around Alcatraz Island and Manhattan Island and the two fastest times in history. In his English Channel swim in 1981, Chapman covered a distance of 37.5 miles in a remarkable 12 minutes and 30 seconds. To his surprise, however, his amazing swim made more headlines in Great Britain than in his hometown of Buffalo. Then two years later, Chapman declared his decision to swim 3.5 miles around the shark-infested Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco. Not only was he the first black to make the swim, but he was also the first person ever to complete it using the butterfly stroke and set a new world record of one minute and 30 seconds.
