Mass Spectrometer
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.âs hybrid mass spectrometer, the Orbitrap Elite, offers a resolving power of 240,000 and a range of fragmentation techniques, helping customers explore challenges in proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and metabolism applications. The system integrates the companyâs Velos Pro ion trap the high-field Orbitrap and advanced signal processing technologies.
The Velos Pro ion trap technology offers linear detection electronics, fast scanning and neutral-blocking front-end ion optics. Features include a four-fold increase in scan speed and higher-energy collisional induced dissociation (HCD) spectra and FTMSn spectral fragmentation trees for confident structural elucidation.

Ion-beam powered engines. Matter-annihilation systems. Anti-matter annihilation systems. Hypervelocity drives. Space-warp leapers. Magnetic scoops which collect stray atoms in space and then use them as fuel. That one wouldn't work, I'm afraid.
Other high-end Qq-TOF systems may nominally reach high resolution, but only at the expense of a dramatic sensitivity loss suffered by relying on resolution-compensating work-arounds like ion beam slicing, multi-reflectrons, etc.
Ion Beam Scientist - Physics Today Jobs
We are looking for a scientist to join our ion beam science team within the National Isotope Centre Group. This role will involve the application of ion beam technology to the research and development of new materials and the transference of ion beam technologies to the environmental, geoscience, agricultural and high value manufacturing sectors. The successful applicant will contribute to both scientific research and science consultancy projects. You will contribute to the development of new ion beam technology applications at GNS Science in partnership with the MacDiarmid Institute of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology and the New Zealand manufacturing network “Materials accelerator” led by the University of Auckland.
The ideal candidate will have the following: • A PhD in Physics/Chemistry, Materials Science, Geophysics, or a related field – candidates with occupational experience equivalent to a PhD will also be considered. • Expertise in ion beam techniques and/or accelerator based nuclear analytical techniques. • Experience in solid state physics and/or advanced materials would be beneficial. • Good publications record involving topics relevant for the position. • Good communication skills. • Good computer skills. • Communication and teamwork skills.
For more information or to apply for this position, please visit our website https://vacancies.gns.cri.nz Closing date: Friday, 15 July 2011.
