Mendell's Mind Not on Golf After Wife's Diagnosis

It was a remarkable performance, considering that his thoughts were far from the golf course.

The day before the tournament started June 12, Mendell learned that his wife, Barbara, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

"I was ready to withdraw, but she said no, go ahead and play,'' Mendell said. "She's pretty stubborn, so she made me go out there and play.

"My mind wasn't really into it Sunday. But I played remarkably well after Sunday,'' he said. "I guess it was a good escape for me.''

Mendell, 55, lost that championship match to Ed Loughrea of Cape Coral, 6 and 4, on June 16 after winning his first three matches.

The Mendells, who live at Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club in Haines City, found out about the cancer, called adenocarcinoma, on June 11.

"That was pretty rough,'' Mendell said. "It sort of floors you.''

Brian said there are two types of lung cancer -- small cell and non-small cell.

"Luckily, she doesn't have small cell, so that's one of the good things,'' he said.

Stage 4 cancer indicates it has spread to other parts of the body.

"She actually had a cyst that was bothering her,'' Mendell said. "Part of the pre-op routine was to do a chest X-ray. That's when they noticed the mass in her lung.''

Barbara, 56, was at Florida Hospital in Orlando on Tuesday to have a stent put in to prepare for chemotherapy.

Brian wanted to share their story in hopes that people would pray for his wife. In an e-mail the day before the finals, Mendell said, "Whether I win or lose tomorrow does not matter. What matters is that Barbara gets every opportunity and chance to get better. I believe the more people praying, the better the chances will be.''

The Mendells will meet with Dr. Tarek Mekhail at Florida Hospital on Thursday to learn the results of a PET scan and brain MRI.

The Mendells' lives have revolved around golf. Not only do they live on a golf course, Barbara worked at Southern Dunes as a waitress until retiring three years ago.

A Haines City native, she was also a waitress at Grenelefe before that.

"She has a huge following of people who loved her,'' Brian said. "She's very memorable, outgoing.''

Brian, who is the warehousing manager at the Coca-Cola plant in Auburndale, is a 4-handicap at Southern Dunes.

Playing good golf is the reason he earned Barbara's hand in marriage.

"We dated for several years, and talked about marriage,'' Brian said. "She joked around and told me when I broke 70, we would get married. Well, I finally shot 69, and we have been happily married ever since.

Low cost Whole Body PET Scan Abroad | Lung Health Guide

PET is an imaging device in nuclear medicine, which focuses on the physiological functions of tissue cells. Technology is used to diagnose cancer, heart disease and brain disorders. There are several options for scanning low cost and low cost PET scanner abroad. In most international destinations for medical tourism full body CT scan is the cost of one third the cost of the United States. For the analysis of whole body PET, Turkey is increasingly preferred. PET scan costs in Jordan are very affordable whole body PET scan in South Korea, is considered the cheapest in the region. Americans are taking the advantage of low cost imaging services at different international locations which include CT scan, India and Full body scan, Mexico.

What is PET scan?

PET scan is frequently used in nuclear medicine as an imaging device, which demonstrates the basic physiological functions of the cells under the study, whilst primarily focusing on metabolism. On the other hand, a whole body positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET / CT) is an imaging technique that incorporates the combined capabilities of nuclear imaging PET scan with CT scan, which in turn provides information on the Basic anatomical structure, shape and size of cells in the study. This technology is very advanced and is available only to some of the best hospitals and leading the world.

What does the PET scan done?

PET scanner perform the essential functions of imagery and are therefore of immense utility for the detection of certain diseases. This imaging technology is used for the following,

Detecting cancer and determining the expanse of spread of the tumor cells throughout the body The imaging technology is also used to determine the management protocol for various brain abnormalities, central nervous disorders and seizures.

Advantage of combined imaging modality of Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET/CT) over Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

There have been several studies published which have indicated that a PET/CT is more effective in determining the extent and spread of malignancies compared to a whole body MRI.
