Going extra mile, Boston's Cup leads to happy Father's Day trip
Father’s Day presents fall into that category, for sure.
As a teenager, you’ve grown out of making popsicle-stick contraptions that are bound by way too much glue, and you’re not yet at the age of purchasing high-quality sweaters and ties with your own money.
So, with all of that weight on my shoulders as Father’s Day creeped up last week, and no true, meaningful gift in mind, when the Boston Bruins (my Dad’s hometown, his favorite team as a kid) won the Stanley Cup last week, I knew that the greatest gift of all was within reach.
Last Saturday, to celebrate Father’s Day, I knew there could be nothing better than to get my brother and my Dad and head up to Boston for the Stanley Cup parade through the city’s historic downtown section.
For all my life, my dad has told me childhood stories of old-time Bruins, including Gilles Gilbert, Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, sharing his story of watching the Bruins win their last Stanley Cup in 1972, as an excited 10-year-old.
In order to really give him a spectacular gift, as well as give him a new Bruins Stanley Cup story that I could actually relate to, I knew that the Bruins’ parade would definitely be the best gift ever.
I was right! It took nothing to convince my Dad that we needed to take this trip. We left at 5:30 a.m. and got to Boston by 10 a.m. for the 11 a.m. start.
After originally considering a 6 a.m. departure, we were glad we left earlier, as most of the public transportation parking lots were full by 10, and highways were clogging up.
Knowing the city of Boston like the back of our collective hand, we discarded the radio’s counsel of taking public transportation to avoid city traffic and drove straight into Copley Square with minimal interference, and we walked a block straight to the parade route.
We all had a great time walking a mile and a half along the parade route (backward, toward the parade’s start), soaking in the crazy atmosphere.
I had never seen so many people in one place, people of all ages. While many people were in their teens and early 20s, many were like my Dad — people who have been waiting 39 years for another hockey championship.
Everyone was in great spirits, all smiles and high-fives and chants and vulgar, yet funny, signs. All drunk on their intense passion for the Boston Bruins.
While the crowd was nothing short of rowdy and raucous, there were no problems, with nothing like what had happened in Vancouver.
